Employer: Youngstown State University
Job Location: Youngstown, OH, USA
Job Category: Academic Positions
Required Degree: Doctorate
Salary: $ 35,000 - $ 40,000

This postdoctoral research position will support the research project of Prof. James J. Carroll at the YSU X-Ray Effects Laboratory, focusing on the experimental study of mechanisms of triggered gamma emission from isomers and related processes. This project is currently funded by the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research and other agencies - the postdoctoral position is separately funded for a period of up to two years with the possibility of extension to a third year. The successful applicant will be involved in all phases of the research, including the opportunity to supervise students. It may also be possible, other duties permitting, for the individual to teach a limited number of undergraduate classes as an aid to strenghtening the professional portfolio.

The X-Ray Effects Laboratory maintains an inventory of current gamma-ray detectors, including four HPGe spectrometers and various scintillators, with significant NIM and CAMAC instrumentation. Several x-ray generating devices are available on-site, including medical and industrial x-ray tubes and a Varian L200A 2-MeV linac. Established research collaborations exist with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia), the University of Stuttgart, the Technical University of Darmstadt, Brookhaven National Laboratory, University of Surrey and other institutions. An introduction to the research topic may be found in Hyperfine Interactions 135, 3-50 (2001) or by contacting the Principal Investigator directly.

The 12-month appointment will provide full fringe benefits, including health care, and privileges accorded to Full-Time Professional and Administrative staff under the present collectively bargained agreement.

Requirements:

Candidates must be US citizens and have a Ph.D. in Physics with experience in experimental nuclear physics and a successful history of publications in reviewed journals. Particularly attractive will be experience in gamma spectroscopy and/or photonuclear reactions at energies up to 10 MeV. Deadline for applications is October 1, 2002 or until the position is filled. Please send a vita, statement of research experience, and at least two letters of recommendation, to:
